The foundation stone of St. Catherine's church was laid by Mr. Richard Butler Clough on 14 July 1837; and the church was consecrated on 7 August 1838. The parish of Colwyn (now better known as Old Colwyn) was created in 1844, from the townships of Eirias, Colwyn, and Cilgwyn, which had been in the parish of Llandrillo; part of the parish of Llanelian, and the hamlet of Graig from the parish of Llysfaen. The church was in Denbighshire until 1974; and in Clwyd from 1974 until 1996. It is now in Conwy County Borough.
