The ancient parish comprised the townships of Cefnygwrdy, Gales, Llan, and Coediog (or Ceidio, or Ceidiog). The church was mentioned in the Norwich Taxation of 1254. The church was in Denbighshire until 1974; and in Clwyd from 1974 until 1996. It is now in "new" Denbighshire.
