According to Archdeacon Thomas, the parish at one time included the parishes of Llanarmon Mynydd Mawr, Llangadwaladr, Llangedwyn (Denbighshire); and part of Llanwddyn (Montgomeryshire).
Before the administrative re-organisation of 1974, the parish was partly in Denbighshire and partly in Montgomery.
The townships which were in the "old" county of Montgomery were: Abermarchnant, Brithdir, Castellmoch, Cefn Coch, Glanhafon Fach, Glanhafon Fawr and Nantfyllon.
The townships which were in the "old" county of Denbigh were: Banhadla Ucha, Banhadla Isa, Gartheryr, Henfachau, Trebrys Fawr, Trebrys Fach, Trefeiliw, Tre'r-Llan and Tre-Wern.

St. Dogfan's church was mentioned in the Norwich Taxation of 1254. It was restored between 1879 and 1882.

The church was in Denbighshire until 1974; and in Clwyd from 1974 until 1996.

It is now in Powys, following boundary revisions in 1996.
