The parish of Rhosllanerchrugog was created on 3 September 1844, from the township of Morton Above, and part of the township of Dynhinlle Ucha, which until then had been in the parish of Ruabon.

St. John's church was consecrated on 4 October 1853.

The church was in Denbighshire until 1974; and in Clwyd from 1974 until 1996.

It is now in Wrexham County Borough.
