CLWYD FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY

WHERE IS CLWYD ?

The county of Clwyd was created in 1974, by merging the ancient counties of Flintshire, most of Denbighshire, and part of Merionethshire.

Clwyd was abolished on 31 March 1996; and at the same time, four new authorities came into being - these were named Flintshire, Denbighshire, Wrexham County Borough, and Conwy County Borough.

However, it is important to be aware that the boundaries of the "new" Flintshire and Denbighshire are quite different from those of the ancient (pre-1974) counties.

The Committee of Clwyd Family History Society has decided that the Society will continue to "cover" the area of North-East Wales which comprised the now defunct county of Clwyd - i.e. the ancient counties of Flintshire, Denbighshire and part of Merionethshire.
