The village of Johnstown, in the community of Rhosllannerchrugog, lies in a former heavily industrialised area in the County Borough of Wrexham. Until 1974 Johnstown was in the historic county of Denbighshire and, from 1974 to 1996, in the county of Clwyd.
The marble memorial, of a soldier on a triangular plinth, stands on the High Street at its junction with Maelor Road. Some of those named on the memorial also appear on the Rhosllannerchrugog War Memorial.
