Ordering BMD Certificates

memorial memorial memorial

Although copies of all birth, marriage and death certificates can be ordered from the External Link General Register Office, it is sometimes more convenient and practical to order from the local Register Office which holds the original registers from the district where the birth, marriage or death took place.

Before ordering a copy of a birth, marriage or death certificate you need to know the Registration District where the birth, marriage or death took place and a Reference.

Some Registration Districts occasionally crossed both national borders and county boundaries and therefore some Welsh records may currently be held at the Chester or Shrewsbury Register Offices in England. Similarly, some English records may be held at the Wrexham Register Office.

You can find this information by searching the BMD Indexes available on one of the commercial genealogy sites such as External Link Ancestry or External Link findmypast, or the free index at External Link FreeBMD.

The information available will be of the form:
   Edward Jones, Birth 1876 Qtr 3, Wrexham 11b 156

However, local Register Offices do not generally use these GRO references!

A better option is to search the local free indexes such as the External Link North Wales BMD; External Link Cheshire BMD or External Link Shropshire BMD (currently only Shrewsbury marriage records!).

The information available here will be of the form:
Edward Jones, Birth 1876,  Ruabon, RBN/044/199, registers held at Wrexham

This information should be filled in on the Application Form when ordering a copy certificate.
Whether you are ordering in person, by post or by telephone, please download and complete one of the birth, marriage or death certificate Application Forms from the appropriate Register Office's web site.

Give as much information as possible on the Application Form. The more information you give, the more likely you are to get the correct certificate! Try to give the following:

Births Marriages Deaths
• Reference
• Date of birth
• Place of birth
• Forenames of the child
• Sex of the child
• Forenames & surname of father
• Forenames, surname & maiden name of mother
• Father's occupation
• Reference
• Date of marriage
• Place of marriage
• Forenames & surname of groom
• Forenames & surname of bride
• Forenames & surname of groom's father
• Forenames & surname of bride's father
• Reference
• Date of death
• Place of death
• Forenames & surname of deceased
• Sex of deceased
• Age of deceased
• Occupation of deceased

Always check with the appropriate Register Offices' web site for full details of opening-hours before visiting. Some offices work on an appointments system. The website will also give the current costs and details of how to order.

• Ordering in person at the Register Office does NOT always guarantee an immediate handover of certificates! They may be sent by post.
