The north-east Wales coalfield stretched from Oswestry in the south to Prestatyn in the north and included mines in Denbighshire, Flintshire and Shropshire.
The Denbighshire part of the coalfield was centred around the parishes of Chirk, Ruabon and Wrexham, formerly heavily industrialised areas with large deposits of iron, coal and clay.
