Chirk War Memorial

Chirk

Y Waun

The Chirk War Memorial commemorates those local people who died in two world wars.

The small border town of Chirk (Welsh: Y Waun) lies in the County Borough of Wrexham. Until 1974, Chirk was in the historic county of Denbighshire and, from 1974 to 1996, in the county of Clwyd.

The war memorial stands on the A5 trunk-road in the centre of the town at the junction of Station Avenue with Church Street. It was commissioned by Lord Howard de Walden, of Chirk Castle, created by sculptor Arthur Eric Rowton Gill (1882-1940) and was unveiled on 17 October 1920. This is an obelisk type memorial, made of Portland Stone, with a relief on one side of a soldier, bent over his rifle, and wearing a long coat and helmet followed by the English dedication. The names of the dead are remembered on two of the other sides, with the fourth side bearing the Welsh dedication and also the names of those who died in the 1939-1945 war.

The memorial commemorates 66 men who were killed in World War I and 19 in World War II. Many of the names also appear on the Pentre War Memorial; the St. Martin's War Memorial and the Weston Rhyn War Memorial.
