Wrexham

Wrecsam

The town of Wrexham (Welsh: Wrecsam) is the largest in the north of Wales. It lies in a former heavily industrialised area which played a major role in the Industrial Revolution.

Until 1974 Wrexham was in the historic county of Denbighshire and, from 1974 to 1996, in the county of Clwyd. In 1996 the County Borough of Wrexham was formed.

Wrexham was historically a major garrison town, with the barracks at Hightown being the headquarters of the Royal Welch Fusiliers from 1877 until 2006.

The Royal Welch Fusiliers was an infantry regiment founded in 1689. The regiment became the Welch Regiment of Fusiliers in 1702, and the Prince of Wales's Own Royal Regiment of Welch Fusiliers in 1714.  At the same time, it was designated as the 23rd Regiment of Foot, which continued until 1881.  The spelling 'Welch' gradually gave way in popular usage to 'Welsh', but the Regiment stuck to the old spelling.  In 1920, the War Office finally agreed that the official spelling should be 'Welch'.

The regiment was amalgamated with the Royal Regiment of Wales on 1st March, 2006, to become 1st Battalion, The Royal Welsh.

Several memorials to those who died in conflict throughout the world are sited inside St. Giles Parish Church in the centre of Wrexham.

The main war memorials for Wrexham are located in the Memorial Hall at Bodhyfryd.

Several of Wrexham's schools also created their own memorials to commemorate former pupils.

Boer War (Royal Welsh Fusiliers)

The regiment recruited mainly in the north of the country.

The impressive memorial to those who died in the Boer Wars and the China Expedition is inside St. Giles Parish Church in the centre of Wrexham.

§ - Diana Powell has written three articles about Llew Alexander Wright and they can be read in Hel Achau nos. 113, 114 and 115.

Boer War (Denbighshire Yeomanry)

The Denbighshire Yeomanry (or Denbighshire Hussars) was the county yeomanry regiment with its origins in Wrexham. It was a volunteer cavalry unit based on the historic yeomanry tradition and was formed in 1794 in response to the war against France. However, during the early years of its formation the Yeomanry was mainly used to control disturbances in the local coalfields. In 1830 they were used to quell coal miners in Rhosllannerchrugog, resulting in the Battle of Cinder Hill.

During the Boer Wars in south Africa, the Denbighshire Yeomanry contributed volunteers for service as the 29th Squadron (Denbighshire) of the Imperial Yeomanry. This formed part of the 9th Battalion of the Imperial Yeomanry, which was made up of several Welsh regiments including the 30th Pembrokeshire; the 31st Montgomeryshire; the 49th Montgomeryshire; the 89th Montgomeryshire and the 88th Welsh Yeomanry. The battalion first arrived in Africa during March and April of 1900.

The memorial to those soldiers of the 29th Squadron who died in the Boer Wars is inside St. Giles Parish Church in the centre of Wrexham.

Waziristan War (Royal Welch Fusiliers)

In the early 1920s, the regiment served in Waziristan, a rugged mountainous region in the northwest of India (later in Pakistan), bordering Afghanistan.

The memorial to those who died in Waziristan is inside St. Giles Parish Church in the centre of Wrexham. The regiment had a long association with the town, with it's barracks at Hightown. However, few of those who died in this campaign appear to have any connections to the area.

Wrexham - Victoria Schools

Wrecsam - Ysgolion Victoria

The Victoria Schools were built around 1890 on Cae Siac, off Victoria Road, Wrexham. The schools were opened by the Mayor of Wrexham, on 1st January 1901, with Charles Dodd as first headmaster.

Following the 1944 Education Act, the schools, in Poyser Street, were renamed Victoria Secondary Modern School. In 1960 the school was converted to an infant and junior school.

The memorial to those former pupils who died in the First World War was unveiled by a fellow former pupil, Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Charles Herbert Benke, D.S.O., M.C..
